FRANCISCO UCEDA

HEROES AND MONSTERS

"This series addresses injustice, taking the world as a stage, and focusing on different protests and movements that have put thousands of people on the streets to show their discontent and to fight for a more equitable, safe and inclusive world. The work focuses on two characters: heroines as agents of change and nobodies, those who thoughtlessly carry out the oppressive actions of governments trying to maintain the privileges of the few."

Francisco Uceda is a New York-based, fine-art photographer whose work explores themes of intertextuality and fiction, creating imagery that references the public imagination, our visual tradition, and also questions the veracity of the photograph.

MOJADAS

"The name of this project, Mojados, comes from the Spanish word for the derogatory slur “wetbacks.” These photographs, which I display in galleries as life-sized prints, are intended to raise consciousness and protest injustice by vividly capturing the humanity that racist, xenophobic assaults aim to deny to immigrants. My portraits fit into a tradition of portraiture that dates back to Robert Frank’s work in the slums of Detroit, where he exposed the rest of America to a part of the heartland they had not seen before."
